I began this semester identifying most with the interpretive paradigm. I held the belief that reality is subjective. That there is not one solid set of answers as reality is individually constructed. I stated in the first reflection that I would ideally like to gain a critical viewpoint by the end of my academic career. After the completion of Liberal studies 200, I am happy to say that I am well on my way to identifying more with the critical paradigm. Throughout this semester in Liberal studies 200 we focussed on developing our interviewing skills as well as learning how to properly use archival material in research, both of which aided in the development of the critical paradigm. Gaining valuable interview skills (i.e. critical examination, analysis of realities and extraction of meaning and value out of what is interpreted) allowed me to apply a critical method. Analysis of archival material allowed me to draw on interpretive methods, as material had to be interpreted, and also critical methods as issues were identified and solutions were proposed.
As stated in the first reflection piece, I have the privilege of going on a study abroad to Japan in April. I plan on applying an interpretive approach to the experience. Ideally I would like to experience the differing social norms and values between the people of Japan and Canada. My studies will be directed at understanding individual perspectives. I plan on accomplishing this by immersing myself within the culture. Observation and asking questions regarding the Japanese lifestyle will be a vital part of my learning process. I will also be subjectively interpreting the communication among individuals, all the while keeping in mind the cultural contexts in which the people inhabit.
Currently I possess an interpretive mindset, but my goal is to master a critical world view by the end of my academic career. Liberal Studies 200 has already aided in me becoming a critical thinker by introducing 2 key research methods: interview and archival material. From these I have learnt how to not only addresses an issue, but also how to propose solutions and take actions that encourage change.
I will definitely use the skills gained in Liberal Studies 200 in the future. The skills will be drawn upon when doing research projects in the future, as well as in my tutorials and grad project. Liberal Studies 200 was a great class that I found extremely engaging as it was always very interactive. Liberal Studies 200 did an excellent job in refocusing my knowledge, as well as providing me with a solid foundation from which I can begin to create my grad project and tutorials!
