Lisa Yuskavage

Abstract Expressionism & Pop Art, Contemporary, Post Modernism, & Women in Art

Lisa Yuskavage, a 58-year-old American Artist, located in New York City, and is known for surprising all with her bold, daring, and erotic artwork. Lisa was born on May 16, 1962, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later she would attend Tyler School of Art at Temple University, receiving her BFA in 1984. After receiving her Bachelor, Lisa would receive her MFA from the Yale University School of Art in 1986. Since then, she has produced hundreds of pieces, ranging from detailed paintings to a handful of sculptures.

A common theme that one can see in every piece of Lisa’s is a figure or many that are nude or at least sensuous and suggestive. Her artwork is buttery and soft with a mix of bright colors that blend well into her figures and landscapes. In an interview, Lisa once said that she was told “Don’t” her whole life, which inspired her to paint the figures she does, to break away from the rules, and to finally see something in galleries, like her work, that has never been seen before. Most are shocked by Lisa’s artwork as it is borderline pornographic and extremely risky and daring. Her work is similar to Gustave Courbet’s L’Origine du monde.

Some of her many paintings include Faucet(1995), NorthView(2000), Travellers(2008), Nel’zah’s(2012), and Hippies(2013).

Gustav Klimt

Expressionism, Fauvism, Early 20th Century and Cubism, Dadaism, and Surrealism

Gustav Klimt was an Australian painter, born on July 14th, 1862, and later passed away on February 6th, 1918. Klimt was one of the many who kick-started the Vienna Secession, an art movement closely related to Art Nouveau, branching out in all art styles. Although Klimt was a master of the Vienna Secession, his art is categorized into Expressionism and was later deeply inspired by symbolism. One of Klimt’s many techniques was to pose his models lying down on a bed so he could portray them as if they were floating. Most, if not all of his pieces show his models in this buttery, silk-like manner, yet full of raw intensity. I personally find his pieces full of life and creativity. Art Nouveau and Expressionism are two of many art styles I am inspired by, and Gustav Klimt emulates both movements immensely.

Arguably his most admired piece, and one of the more well-known paintings of all time, would be The Kiss. Some of his other more recognized works include Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, Beethoven Frieze, Judith and the Head of Holofernes, and finally, The Maiden.

Georges Seurat

Realism, Pre-Impressionism, Pre-Raphaelites and Impressionism, Post-Impressionism.

Georges Seurat was a French painter and draftsmen, born on December 2, 1859, and passed away on March 29, 1891. He is most known as one of the icons of 19-century art and altered art history by initiating NeoImpressionism, a technique also known as Divisionism or Pointillism. Seurat’s subjects focused on urban leisure, located by a river or beach, depicting the locals relaxing, using bright pastel colours by flicking them across his canvas. I found his paintings to be very touching and show an array of emotions, full of passion and life. The simplicity of his pieces has an element of peacefulness and serenity that is rare and special. Arguably by far, his most love piece has to be, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Which was featured in the beloved film Ferris Bullers Day Off, as did Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, The Old Guitarist by Pablo Picasso, and Equestrienne by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Some of Georges Seurat’s more prominent pieces include, Bathers at Asnières, La Seine à la Grande-Jatte, La Tour Eiffel, and Models.

Georges de La Tour

Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, and Romanticism

Georges de La Tour was a French painter during the Baroque period, and unlike other artists, he spent the majority of his career painting religious scenes lit by candlelight. Although he was well known at his time, and Louis XIII was one of many to collect his work, La Tour was forgotten later on. His paintings show great depth and contrast, noticeably influenced by the chiaroscuro style within Caravaggio’s pieces. At the beginning of La Tours’ career, you can find rare pieces depicted within daylight as he later found comfort in dark paintings, rich with contrast. Some of his most know pieces include The Fortune Teller, The Penitent Magdalene, Newborn Baby (Christmas), Saint Joseph, and St Sebastian Attended by St Irene.
