Canada

Country Background (1)

Canada is located in the north of North America with 10 provinces and 3 territories extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and up north into the Arctic Ocean. Canada is the world’s second largest country; the total size of Canada is 9.98 million square kilometres. The southern border connects the United States, the total distance of the border is 8891 kilometers long, which is the longest bi-national land border in the world. The capital city of Canada is Ottawa, which is located in the east of southern Ontario, sitting on the Ottawa River. The city of Ottawa has the most educated population in all Canadian cities and have the highest standard living in the nation with low unemployment rate. Canada is the tenth largest economy in the world with a nominal GDP of around $1.73 trillion US dollar. It is also one of the least corrupt country in the world and one of the top ten trading nations with a highly globalized economy.

Hiring Process

Hiring is one of the major components to the overall successful of businesses. A well put together job description is a good business investment because it can be used to support most HR functions: recruitment, selection, orientation, training, work plans, compensation, performance reviews and legal defence. Job descriptions explain the key responsibilities of the actual position, reporting relationships and work environment.

Job description (3)

A job description is the first thing a company needed during hiring process and most of the job description should have the following components:

  • Job Title
  • Organization Name
  • Job Objective
  • Duties and Responsibilities
  • Qualifications and Requirements
  • Organizational structure
  • Special Working Conditions
  • Salary and Benefits
  • Contact Info

Screening and Interviewing

The next step after posting the job description will be the screening and interviewing process. In Canada, companies will mostly look over two things of the applicants, which are cover letters and resumes during the screening process to find people that meet the requirements. After that, the company will contact people who passed the screening process. Hiring the “RIGHT” person in today’s marketplace is more important than ever. With increased global competition, downsized staffs, and downward price pressures, having the wrong person in a position is costly. Interviews are particularly useful for getting the story behind a participant’s experiences. The interviewer can pursue in-depth information around a topic to finalize if the interviewee is the right person to hire.

Selection Practices (3)

During the selection process, a pre-employment assessment will be very useful for the company. A pre-employment assessment is a battery of tests used to collect information from job applicants for the purpose of aiding hiring decisions. Such assessments may include items on topics such as motives, ethics, traits, work experience, intelligence, skills, preferences, and preferred work hours. When effectively measured, all of these things may be used, in some capacity, to make accurate predictions about which applicant will perform well on the job and/or which ones will remain with the company.

Miscellaneous information (Legal Issues) (4)

After the whole process, there are a few final steps that the company should pay attention to in order to legally settle the employee to work in Canada.

Accept and Sigh the Job Offer

The company should clarify the details about of the job to the interviewee, such as the duties of the job, hours of working, employment benefits, salary and probation period in order to avoid misunderstanding along the road. In Canada, the companies will need to follow the Federal labour standards and also the employment standards in different provinces.

Examine the Employee’s Social Insurance Number (SIN)

The Social Insurance Number is used to administer government benefits. As an employer, they need to view every new employee’s SIN card within three days of the employee starting work and record the employee’s name and SIN exactly as they appear on the card.

Have the Employee Fill out Required Forms

Form TD1, Personal Tax Credits Return, determines how much tax is to be deducted from a person’s employment income. A new employee has to complete the federal TD1 and the provincial TD1 if more than the basic personal amount is claimed.

Start a File for the New Employee

The employer should collect employee records such as time sheets and performance evaluations and manage forms related to running payroll such as T4 slips. Getting the employee records off to an organized start will save time later.
