About Me

  • November 2022

Hi my name is Nicole Jennings and I love Film and photography, I started writing, directing and producing my own independent short films when I was 16. Young and in highschool I had a fiery ambition burning. I wanted to do meaningful work and express myself creatively. Now experiencing the Motion Picture Arts program at Capilano University I feel confident in my craft. That fiery ambition isn't burning out just yet or ever. I’m actively making short films whenever I can. I am constantly improving my understanding  of each individual craft involved in film. I am able to turn a boring sight into a striking one, I'm able to direct audiences to feel various emotions. Film is everything to me.

My research topic was queerbaiting in Supernatural. This topic was rather difficult to research.  Finding peer-reviewed sources that even mention supernatural was little to non-existent. The name supernatural would just come up when the author was giving us examples of shows that queerbait their audience. I couldn’t find any in-depth analysis of characters Castiel or Dean, nor their relationship, only brief mentions of the pairing.  I found a much more generalized analysis of the impacts of queerbaiting rather than an analysis of queer storytelling in supernatural. Condensing my essay was a bit tricky. My title is “queerbaiting in supernatural” but I take a deep dive into subtext, sub-hidden romantic storylines, production Networks, Dean Winchester's bisexuality, Dean's psyche, Casteils psyche and Casteils sexuality. Even though my essay is about supernaturals issues with queerbaiting, Including as much information and backstory is vital for readers to understand your text and your argument. Concrete foundations of background information are an important part of an argument but it's essential when others with differing strong opinions and views are involved. People who do not agree with Dean and castiel's relationship being romantic are very adamant about the validity of their view without even considering the other. Presenting such an accusation of queerbaiting needs backing up with in-depth discussion and analysis or else the evidence will seem foggy and unconvincing. The in-depth analysis I wrote let me properly explain the characters and their choices, their psychology as well as how their relationship is written as a love story.  Without all that information my argument that Supernatural is guilty of queerbaiting would be very flawed and unconvincing. Another instance where it was hard to narrow down topics and text was the fact that supernatural has fifteen seasons, there are so many more important scenes and moments that would provide even more evidence to my claims that would further convince people and further express just how long supernaturals queerbaiting went on for and how disappointing and harmful it was to the LGBTQ+ audience, though if I included analysis from all those seasons my essay would never end considering the more the seasons progressed the more obvious a strong it became. So to condense my essay I had to sum up the rest of the seasons and ending and the impacts it had on the LBGTQ+ audience. Writing this essay felt a lot easier than past essays, I felt like I had an understanding of the structure and I felt like it flowed very well. Initially, peer-reviewed sources were quite a struggle for me but the more I read, the more information I found useful. Even though most peer-reviewed sources didn't have any analysis of Dean and Castiel I learned a lot about common queerbaiting storytelling choices like “kill the gays” as well as what started the word queerbaiting. Un-peer-reviewed sources gave me the most insight into differing opinions helping me mold my essay to communicate with their rebuttals and confusions. Un-peer-reviewed sources also helped me locate scenes for analysis.  This Essay was very informative for me and I am glad I had the choice to do something I am passionate about discussing, I hope I can write about something so in-depth that I care about again.
