I spent around 7-9 hours on this assignment, and I believe it was a success. My approach was simple, use markers to recreate the feeling of Hobby Horse Magazine as my artifact. My overall comfort with the medium made the entire process a lot smoother, and that comes across in the flowy, natural feeling of the illustration. In Order to follow the brief, I made sure to make my object more physical, I decided you use my notebook to make the magazine feel physical.

PROCESS

Original Sketch
Sample, Initial Sketch and Sleeve

I started with an initial flower sketch to evoke a like other hobby horse illustrations, at this point I wasn’t sure how I was going to block out the sketch, but after looking at these reference images from other similar authentic by Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo I had a solid foundation.

From that point onward, I began working on the actual magazine part the cover separately, mainly to avoid ruining the magazine sleeve because it was extremely delicate. I measured and cut out a piece or paper the same length and the front face and inked it separately. A lot of mistakes were made, but I would always turn them into something that felt intentional, and that helped make the piece more engaging as a result.

LAYOUT

I believe my tag provides information that enriches our understanding of the history of design, the object itself and is readable and engaging. I used the opportunities of a page layout to help guide the eye to my work, without adding unnecessary visual clutter. The orange, yellows, white are very pleasing to the eye, and the books and pencils provide simple and unintrusive decoration, that frame the Tag and point the eyes to the Artifact.

Overall, I’d give my assignment and 9. It is not only a good piece of work on its on its own, but it follows the brief and the spirit of the assignment
