Comparative Critical Literary Analysis of M. Houellebecq’s Platform & J. Kincaid’s A Small Place
This tutorial will explore the nature of tourism, as it has been depicted in some current literature. The course will consider the effects, both positive and negative, on the environment, local culture, and the psychology of the tourist and the resident population. The course will pay special attention to the roles that globalization, capitalism, race, religion and sexuality play in the current unfolding of the international tourism industry. The course will seek to not only understand a fuller range of the impacts of the travel industry, but to ask whether or not such an enterprise can be done ethically.
