Ever since I was a little girl, I‘ve been surrounded by art my whole life. From my father’s calligraphy, to my grandma’s paintings, art has played a very strong influence in my journey to growing up. My earliest memory is of me and my grandma, back when I used to live in China. I remember when I went over to her house once, she was painting a beautiful scenery of a mountain in the living room. She decided to let me join her and taught me how to draw little birds on the landscape. That was my first and last memory with her before she passed, but I like to believe that her passion for art carried over to me. Ever since that day, I’ve started drawing and painting, which later on turned into an interest in design. For that reason, I’ve decided to begin my career at Capilano university to develop both better interpersonal skills and better artwork. My name is Sophia Pan, and I hope to get the feedback and criticism I need to continue to grow and learn from my peers.
Other than drawing and painting, I also happen to enjoy many other mediums of art, such as literature, cinema, theater, photography, dance, and music. I enjoy reading the works of Albert Camus and exploring philosophical subjects, but I prefer to keep my options open and read any book I can get my hands on regardless of genre and story. For cinema, I am a huge movie geek and I love discussing cinematography with others, as well as the meanings behind movies, and talk about the plot and characters. I have a huge interest in set design as well as character design, and I hope to get opportunities in the future to expand that. As for dance and music, I’m a huge hip-hop fan, but I don’t mind some pop, indie or punk from time to time. When it comes to dancing, I love learning choreographies and freestyling since I use dancing as a method of exercising. For music, I am trying to learn the electric guitar and hoping to polish my skills. I love getting the opportunity to try new things and learning new things, so I want to open myself to new possibilities and be more fearless.
My career goal is to be able to do something related to cinema, whether that would be costume design, character design, set design or anything along those lines. I also hope to be able to sell my artwork and/or design prints. I’m also open to the idea of trying interior design or graphic design. No matter what I end up doing in the future, I hope that I can spread my art out to the world, and to use my art as a way to make an impact on others. I’m passionate and I want to give it my best, so I hope that my hard work will be rewarding and to meet new people and new opportunities.
