Presenting myself to the cohort
It’s an exciting challenge to find ways to visually express aspects of myself for my new teachers and classmates to see. How do I communicate more than just the words and images that I put on the page? At the end of all the effort I really can’t control how people feel about my work. Although, I can attempt to put my most favourable traits forward. Writing and reflecting on key words helped inform the approach and began to surface the energetic quality I wanted to portray in the layout.
Inspiration and process
Inspired by dynamic uses of lettering and punchy words from a Reebok ad campaign; I sketched and drafted a few shapes and how I could arrange so many different pieces of who I am onto one page. Drawing with graphite and ink I used two different portraits of myself. Utilizing my love of graphic line work for some organic elements of plant life and mountains. Using some repeating elements of colour and line e to help lead the eye through the large letter-forms.
Reflection
I found the most prominent feeling was a desire to showcase my best self to my new peers. It felt important to showcase my personal style of illustration and give some insight into some of my key personality traits. From writing, drafts, layout, portraits, and execution I took between 7 and 8 hours to complete the spread and would give myself a 7/10 mark at the end. This was a solid foundational exercise and I’m excited for all the knowledge ahead!
