Anthony Neil Dart – Seattle Based Designer

As I browse through the myriad of projects on the Designer’s website I am captivated by each new project thumbnail. I find dynamic portraits, unique letterforms, and eye-catching linework in what feels like a distinct style.
One image that encapsulated the aspect of shape to me was one of the images within the project titled “Oranje”. The image above uses two large shapes of white and orange that are positioned parallel to the viewing surface. These shapes have hard edges that intersect centrally and layer with a human model positioned vertically on the page. The seemingly flat shapes create a level of illusory depth in the way they appear to wrap around the figure. This depth is achieved without any gradient or shadowing; rather clever implications of edges.
These hard-edged rectangles also mimic the way in which the human model has their arms crossed across their body. This repetition utilizes the implied shape of the crossed arms to develop rhythm in the composition. The details feel subtle and intentional, and bring a great deal of intrigue to a dominantly grayscale design.
