“Vertigo” by Saul Bass

While observing “Vertigo” by Saul Bass the element of texture is apparent in his design. The spiralling effect created with the cross-hatching provides depth in the piece and the texture produces an optical illusion that looks as though the image is moving. This element of movement closely resembles the symptom of vertigo, creating synergy between the movie title and the illustration. Along with this, the texture within the piece helps guide the eyes towards the focal point of the piece, keeping the audience engaged and able to gather information efficiently and effectively. The overall composition of the poster allows the viewer to step into the shoes of someone with vertigo while also giving them a brief overview of the film’s main subject.
