My Name is Evelyn McCammon. I am currently working towards my Bachelor of Visual Communication and Design with the IDEA School of Design here at Capilano University. When I first heard about this program in grade 10, I just knew this is where I need to be to achieve my goal of being a graphic designer. I love the IDEA program because they provide mentorships to their students to help build connections and experiences to prepare them for the design industry. In this program, I am hoping to learn how to do digital art and so that I can combine the two styles and as a result, improve as an artist.
I knew I was destined to be in a creative industry due to facing a near constant gravitational pull towards creative activities growing up. All throughout my childhood I would beg to be excused from activities that weren’t creative, so that I could sit out and draw. In grade 10 – 12 I was a part of the AFK art academy, which was taught by Daylen Luchsinger who had the biggest impact on my art and guided me through realism to modern art. Outside of art I played soccer, however, I recently stopped playing because I wanted to be able to focus on my studies. Something most people are unable to pick up upon first introduction with me is that I am competitive. Soccer would always bring out my competitive side and taught me how to work as a team. I learned that when everyone in a team is motivated towards a goal, anything is possible. These skills that I have gained in my lifetime I will carry with me for the rest of my life and I will apply them to my studies at Capilano University as well as my future career.
I love to spend my free time watching TV, hanging out with friends, or going for hikes with my dog, where I would pick flowers and look for mushrooms. Nature has always inspired me when it comes to my art. I grew up next to a forest and spent my summers camping all around Canada. If you look at my art, majority of it has a connection the environment, whether that is by appreciating its beauty or by voicing concerns about climate change. I would love to work for environmental groups as a graphic designer in the future.
Much like any other program, Graphic Designers also need to have good communication skills. My English 100 class, with Dr. Mandy Koolen, will teach me how to write professionally so that I can share my ideas in a professional manner with good grammar and proper sentence structure.
All the experiences listed above shaped and moulded not just who I am as an artist, but as a person in general. I am eager to apply my current skills with all the things I will learn at Capilano University and I am excited to achieve all my goals in life.
