Impressionism & Post Impressionism: Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s painting style is one that I like in particular for this period. There’s a certain sense of life injected into his work that I find, in my personal opinion, is to a certain degree lacking in other artists of this and earlier periods, except in the most bold of Baroque paintings. His use of vibrancy is pleasant to look at, as well as the very organic and unstaged feel of his figures in his images- I find even many scenes of day-to-day life can seem stiff and posed in paintings, and Renoir’s use of soft brush strokes paired with bright colors helps to nullify that feeling in his own paintings. All in all, my favorite artist of the group shown from this period.

Survey 4: Mummy Brown

Description of Mummy Brown and a replica of the paint

For the fourth survey of this class I had to do a colour artefact, so I chose the controversial and historically fascinating colour of oil paint known as Mummy Brown. This particular smudge on art history has fascinated me for quite a long time, given its grotesque nature and the reaction of the public as its ‘secret’ ingredient became more widely known, so when I got this project I knew I had to use it as the basis of my artefact.

I used a cheap tube of brown watercolour as the base of my artefact, focusing my camera on the blob of paint rather than the tube itself, since the paint was the important aspect of the project. For the information regarding the pigment, I used a small canvas board and wrote the information on it in brown, intentionally smudging it to give it a less perfect appearance, then propped it up on a small easel I have at home to allude to a painting made with the pigment mentioned.

In execution, I’ll admit I did stumble. The size of the images my camera took were too wide, and by extension I had to cut corners a bit for them to fit together. If I were to do it again, I would have taken the components together as a single image rather than two separate images, but as it did not work out that way I try not to dwell on it.

Overall, I am relatively happy with the outcome, even if it’s not my best work. I am happy enough to present this as my final product, and hope to improve on future projects.
