Decolonization Project: Gathering Roots Reflection

My Project Description

For our project, Rocio and I decided to talk about Indigenous food. While people talk a lot about the destruction of First Nations culture, these conversations are usually limited to language and art. We think this is important to touch on since food is a huge part of culture and a huge part of our livelihood. As such, we decided to spread awareness to the next generation as early as we could in the form of high school classes for students to take. This project would be aimed towards all Canadians so that First Nations could connect back with their culture and families and so other Canadians could be educated about the importance of the cuisine.

Challenges

My main challenges while doing this project was the sensitivity around appropriating First Nations culture and also creating an aesthetic that was unique but also appealing to our target market of teenagers. For this project, while Rocio was in charge of the layout and recipe cards, I was in charge of the website. To have a cohesive overall look, I tried to emulate Rocio’s initial choice of black and green. In the end, we decided combine the black and tone down the green.
