Cipe Pineles: Seventeen going on Success

Cipe Pineles was a graphic designer, editorial and magazine art director for many prominent magazines in the 20th century. Born in Austria in 19o8, Pineles was one of the first women to make a career as a successful art director within the design industry of New York.

From a young age, Pineles took a shine to art and design, and won a scholarship to the Pratt Institute for her capabilities in art and design. Later in life she married William Golden and then Will Burtin after Golden’s death, and outlived both of them.

Pineles worked for many different magazines over the course of her life; Vogue, Overseas Woman, and was the art director for magazines like Glamour, Seventeen, Charm and Mademoiselle, some of which are still in circulation today.

I personally love Cipe Pineles work. She broke a lot of boundaries within the industry for women, and her routine shattering of the glass ceiling paved the way for young female designers everywhere.

Her work features women, made by women, for women, and I think its important that she managed to carve out that space. Her designs are sleek and simple and eye-catching, and I admire how she uses a single image to dominate a page rather than filling it. She is a great example of ‘less is more’.
