Wes Wilson

Wes Wilson (Robert Wesley Wilson) was born on July 15, 1937, in Sacramento, California.

Wes Wilson, an American designer most known for developing and popularising the Psychedelic font, which appears to be melting or moving. Wes Wilson was well recognised for his work on Bill Graham’s posters in San Francisco. Along with Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, and Stanley Mouse, Wes Wilson was considered one of “The Big Five” San Francisco poster painters.

I love the melting and moving type Wes Willson has going on. It is really interesting how he mixes the visual design and types together. The use of colour and choosing themes are very interesting and cool too.

Wilson began receiving commissions in the middle of the 1960s, when the Haight-Ashbury movement raised demand for posters and handbills in the San Francisco area. “Are We Next?” was his first poster, which he released in 1965. Wilson developed, self-printed, and distributed the anti-Vietnam War protest poster, which featured a swastika imprinted with an American flag design. “I just put it out there to get people thinking about stuff,” Wilson explained. Chet Helms, a rock promoter, was so taken with the image that he asked Wilson to make handbills for Family Dog.
