Johan Barthold Jongkind

History

Pictured here

Similar to other popular tortured souls of the impressionist movement, this painter struggled through wars with his own mind and found refuge in painting. Born in the Netherlands, Jongkind studied honed his skills in the art institute of The Hague (now Netherlands third largest city). He received much praise from fellow painters, including Claude Monet and other members of the impressionist moment. Though he was very talented, he never found the fame he deserved, and languished in Côte-Saint-André, and would later die in a mental institution.

With talent, without a future

Some of his work is truly inspiring, if ever discovered the way Van Gough was, would have truly inspired people. This piece really stands out to me a crown jewel of his work. Entitled “In Holland, Boats near the Mill” is amazing at conveying its atmosphere. This warm yellow, baking the otherwise cool environment in this piercing light. His brush technique is very indicative of the finest of his movement, adding immense character to an already well composed piece.

Another of my favourites, is “Fishing boat.” What a simple name for an unhinged wild piece. This is one of the most energetic uses of brush strokes in a way not often seen by other impressionists of his era. He really wasn’t afraid to push Impressionist ideas to its breaking point.

  1. Pavan,
Solid work on this painter I did not know about. You continue to impress with your choices of more obscure artists throughout art history. That is commendable! You have some good information but supply much of your own personal thoughts and enthusiasms to your writing which, I’ll say it again, is what I’m looking for. I’m giving you a 2/2 on this post. Also you scored 27/50 on your mid term quiz which translates to a D so just scraping by. Hopefully you’ll do better on the final.
    Jeff
