Daniel Pelavin:
Daniel Pelavin is an illustrator, and typeface designer whose work is best recognized for its precisely drafted shapes, unique colour palette, and original typography.
He began his career as an apprentice, working up through the ranks of a local art studio where he was able to train with all kinds of graphic artists. These included decorative, fashion, product, and technical illustrators. In addition, he was also able to train under letterers, typographers, and graphic designers.
He is a master at combining stylistic elements from different historical periods while maintaining unwavering focus on clarity. To do so, he uses a restrained and simplified vocabulary of geometric forms, rich flat colours, and typography that is inspired by the 20th century’s culture/objects. The result is a style that is retro and very deco and works that are timeless and enduring.
His work as a typeface designer also follows a similar style. Thus, his fonts are designed to be tools which can provide designers the freedom and inspiration to explore their own vision. He has designed the typefaces Anna, Bing, Rilke, Twentieth Century, Tribeca Script, and Salty Dog as well as many more.
Other than illustration and type design, Pelavin is a creator whose interests lie outside of his main profession. With an interest in dimensional form and tactile experiences, he has explored the field of 3D modelling and rendering with hopes to create images, objects, products, and devices whose usefulness is enhanced and extended by the eloquence of their design and construction. This is one example that has made him play a pioneering role in the evolution of digital media.
In 1976, he began his teaching career teaching lettering, typography, and illustration at St. Clair County Community College. Since then, he has taught at graduate illustration programs at Syracuse University, Hartford Art School, and FIT.
Daniel Pelavin is a celebrated illustrator and designer with national and international clients. He has received many awards for his illustration and typographic designs. Specifically for his ability to seamlessly combine the two.
Since 1979, Pelavin has a studio in New York where he produces illustration and typographic design for clients in publishing, advertising, and graphic design. His skill in transforming and melding cultural ephemera into cogent and compelling messages for publishing, advertising, and communication design is what makes him an exceptional designer during the post-modern era.
