Science / Discovery Spread

When I was younger I read a book featuring images from early cinematography, including scenes from films by both the Lumière Brothers and Georges Mélies. Thus, as soon as I saw I had gotten technology for this era, I immediately knew I wanted to base my spread on early films and the conception of the cinématographe.

The film projector is the only thing in colour, as I not only wanted to highlight it (literally and figuratively), but also make it seem separate from the rest of the spread; representing the black and white films of this time. I used motifs from the Georges Méliès film “A Trip to the Moon”, such as the graphic stars and crescent moons, which actors would sit on as they hung from the sets. I wanted to incorporate the text into the spread, so I tried to illustrate it being projected from the cinématographe, though I’m not sure it communicates the idea clearly.

I would give myself an 8/10 on this spread. There are many things I would change if I were to do it again, such as either using coloured paper instead of the pain white, or fully committing to the black and white films by leaving the spread completely bereft of colour. Overall I’m satisfied with it (although the separated text looks a tad strange when not bound in a book).
