Joaquín Sorolla

A modern impressionist artist known for his mastery of light, Joaquín Sorolla is best known for his portrayals of life in Spain, through the use of landscapes, people, and scenery. Sorolla was greatly inspired by Diego Velazquez, as well as other great masters, painting many studies of their works in his early career.

The detail in Selling Melons is astonishing; one of his many pieces portraying Spanish culture.

Studying in Paris, Rome, and his hometown Valencia in Spain, Sorolla cultivated his artistic talents from the age of 15. His parents died when he was only two years old, so he was raised alongside his sister by their aunt and uncle. This perhaps contributed to his focus on family, and he later painted many portraits of his wife and children.

Mending the Sail is my favourite of all his works, due to the dappled light and gorgeous, lively colouring. His paintings were quite large – this one being 2.22 x 3 metres. Not only were his paintings large, however, but his palettes were too. For some paintings his palettes would be the size of grand pianos (crazy!) and his brushes would be three feet long!

“I could not paint at all if I had to paint slowly. Every effect is so transient, it must be rapidly painted.”

I adore Return from Fishing, as not only is the scene itself breathtaking, but his execution makes it even more so. My favourite element of this painting is the sail and the way Sorolla depicted its interaction with light and shadows.

I’m so happy to have been assigned these blog posts, since I never would have found Sorolla’s work otherwise; he is now one of my favourite artists of all time.
