Hello everyone!
I had reviewed and chosen the story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor. It was a long story with many characters so I started with a plan just to get my head around it. My approach is to try and capture the story from start to finish, but Im not stuck to that as part of the process – Ill try though!
Im inserting a screenshot from my journal which is a brainstorm/planning for the final comic pages project.
- On the right page, I jotted down what I think are my steps and general stages so I can pace this out! I’ve gone through the story a few times, marking on the text and deducing the main scenes.
- Im currently on stage 2, researching some styles from the Drawn and Quarterly book I picked up from a library (by chance!). Next steps are some initial character sketches, and distilled storyboard, coming next blog!
- On the left and below right I jotted down the main scenes and tried reducing it to the main story. I wanted to focus on the grandma’s character and showing her personality and her mistake leading the family to danger.

Hi Sharleen! I think the way you’ve laid out your planning is really useful for beginning your sketching! It is very clear and sounds like it has a good flow. I know a lot of comic artists type out their characters “scripts” before they begin drawing to make sure the scenes and text are as curated as they can be, maybe that could be useful if you’re including text. Good luck on the next stage of the assignment!

Thanks Sydney! I took your recommendation on the scripting and found it helped me move along and see how things fit. Thanks!
