Right out of the gate, I was able to experience Rethink’s right mix of projects that are still moving along today! Several other projects with shorter timelines and tasks have also filled my time, but these two are ones I can speak a little more about! Let’s dive in and explore how those have been! Rethink’s clients tend to fall into two sea-worthy categories: barges and speedboats.

The hard-working barge!

Barges are usually a bigger client, with bigger budgets, and carry a lot of history. The brand standards document I picked up from a barge client had a lot of content and was one piece of other projects for this company. So imagine a barge, carrying its load…it must be steady and secure! It was a hardworking project because of the details to consume and making sure every page instructed with words and visuals how to convey the brand! At first, because I jumped into a project with some history, I got to learn through doing and was able to jump in and out of the project. I learned how to manage time and overcame the initial awe of the barge and the contents!

The fast and fun speedboat!

Speedboats are usually smaller clients. Imaging a speedboat maneuvering through the water, fast, light, and the ride is fun! The dental branding project is certainly a speedboat where there is more creative exploration and application. This was much more like our projects in school, but at a faster pace with real client input. I got to see how the boat moves, with shallow holes and deep-dive explorations. I also got to see how we constructed and shared the options with the clients. This was one of the highlights of the practicum because our work got tested in real life and one of my ideas was in the top two! I also got the feeling of being in a team as our ideas fed off of each other and I worked together with the team to come up with the presentation mockups/structure and made sure to get their peer feedback. I learned how to craft within a real client’s brief and its timing.

Last week, I did a little more crafting and made sure my initial idea worked across the brand and it was fun to hear how the clients loved our work! Stay tuned next week as we will find out which direction we will steer in!

The out of the blue submarine!

Wait, there is another ship! A submarine or change proposal is more passion/non-for-profit type projects that we might even invest in. Imagine a submarine rising above the waters to your surprise, and I think that’s what they are intended to do when they get released! As the two projects above and others have slowed down, I’ve been ideating on change proposals.

A few things at hand first are a few books and some good wisdom! In IDEA, we got exposed to the Advertising Concept book and had a few campaign boot-camp classes with lists of ways to ideate! I was also recommended the book, Hey Whipple, Squeeze This! for a great book about advertising. During the coffee meetings, I was encouraged to look at past award winners and look into Rethink’s website. To also re-iterate the benefit of those coffee meetings, there were some sea-worthy tips beyond the lists you get in books and classes!
