This imagine/ideate/explore stage includes sketchbook ideation. Part of this process was started during Phase 1, as I was generating what I knew about geology visuals off the top of my head. Also, I purchased a Roadside Geology Book to get some actual background information about the geology of Vancouver and the Sea to Sky area.

To start ideating, I decided to use a brainstorming technique used in an advertising class, which is timed 5 minutes per concept (eg. play with size, play with type, etc.). It was a broad start, but I was able to jot down initial visual graphic ideas, logos, voice, name, and packaging ideas.

The initial moodboards included geology visuals, geology in design, and hotel design. There are lots of examples of geology visuals that could be used. Also, a scan of geology in design was not prolific but when used, I found good sophisticated examples.

I definitely intend to build more especially when we narrow down to top concepts, but a crucial thing I learned from my mentor in his feedback was to start digitizing my ideas while I do my sketches. I found this as great advice for me as I would like to start refining and playing around digitally earlier. While we may not use some, he said this was part of their process as it allows one to see things more refined and possible.

This would be the next step is to refine some graphic ideas as I do have collected all possible geological based graphics. I hope to come to at least 2 concepts to build on and experience “selling to the client”.

When I met with my mentor, he recommended starting digitizing early as one may already have a hunch of what we may prefer. For me, the challenging part is doing ideation while executing, which I haven’t yet done in other projects. Previously, we have worked more on paper before going digital! However, I do feel this a bit more organic because all the parts inform each other anyhow! I would assess myself 8.5/10 as I feel my ideas are the first ones and I feel I can dive deeper in the second round of ideas!
