Winslow Homer, 1880,

Winslow Homer

Homer was an intelligent artist who grew to become a well-known landscape painter of the realism movement. Initially, Homer was a recognized illustrator in his time and was sent to the front lines of the American Civil War (1861-1865) to sketch battle scenes. Homer’s illustrations were not getting much attention. This led him to indulge in the world of painting. After learning the just the basics of painting from Frédéric Rondel, Homer began creating magnificent oil paintings on his own after a year of teaching himself. He then later became iconic for his use of watercolors in his marine paintings. Personally, I love his style and the many different ways that he is able to make his waves look different in each painting. Homer’s paintings were definitely a different outlook during this time, capturing a different lifestyle out at sea.
