Wes Wilson

Wes Wilson is an American Graphic Designer that is best known for introducing the psychedelic movement in America. At a young age, Wilson harboured artistic interests and a love for art. Taking inspiration from Art Nouveau, Wilson created the iconic psychedelic design. Considered as one of the “Big Five” for San Francisco poster artists, Wilson would be well known for creating the symbols that represent the peace/psychedelic movement.

Wes Wilson studied at the San Francisco State University, and was working a contact printer at the time. His constant work on handbills would lead to Wilson obtaining a job as a poster designer. Being well known for his colour cohesion, abstract compositions inspired by Art Nouveau, and his experimentation Wes Wilson would slowly distinguish himself from others copying his artistic sense.

What resulted in this experimentation, was a revolutionary movement that would span multiple decades and create a new era for poster design. What started as a subculture that reflected music at the time, would become a mainstream type of media expression in things such as Time, Life magazine, and various other mediums.

Wilson would grow to become a monster in graphic design, managing to host a show that looked back on rock posters, having work exhibited throughout the world, and creating event posters for successful expos. To this day, he still enjoys creating and discussing art.
