Saul Bass is an incredibly renowned graphic designer and filmmaker across the globe. Bass’s work was also one of the very first graphic designers I was ever introduced to, and I instantly fell in love with his style.

His style was initially inspired by Rand, Russian Constructivist typography, Bauhaus design theory, along with other New York School designers. However, Bass takes a massive design leap and creates a new graphic style. His style of design is easily recognizable with his use of color, typography, and negative space which corresponds with his clear ideas and bold symbols.

“I want to make beautiful things,” “Even if nobody cares. That’s my input”

Saul Bass

One of my favorite posters by him is the poster for “Such Good Friends”. This poster is so simplified with how it’s put together, yet clearly shows 2 women’s legs. It gives the viewer a small glimpse into what the movie might be about and leaves them wondering, wanting to watch to learn more.

With Bass’s posters, he manages to show the viewer a story, giving just the right amount of information, and what the film is about, all within a simple symbol.
