Alex Stienweiss was born March 24, 1917 in Brooklyn. Throughout his career he was primarily known for creating and designing various album covers. He was brought up from somewhat of a design background, his mother being a seamstress and his father a women’s shoe designer. In 1938 Alex was promoted to art director at Columbia records where he would design album covers as well as cover art. Until around 1945 Alex was designing most of all the covers for Columbia records and made a name for him self in not only the company but nationally as a designer. Later on he continued to influence the design world when branching out and collaborated with various other companies/ artists. Such as, Remington and London records. His known style or theme during this time that made him iconic is that he focused on using “strange garnish colours, odd lighting, and numerous visual puns” in his designs. His longest lasting design was his cover for the original broadway cast of South Pacific.
