Post 3 – Impressionism

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was a French Impressionist painter and a founding member of the Impressionist movement. He is best known for his paintings of Parisian city scenes and depictions of real-life scenes full of light and colour.

Renoir wasn’t always a painter as we now know him. He began his career as a porcelain painter, copying and decorating dishware.

While Renoir was always a gifted artist, he didn’t start his career as a pioneer of Impressionism. Before he developed his own distinct style, Renoir would study and copy the artworks at the Louvre. That’s how he learnt how to paint: by closely observing the works of the old masters.

Renoir studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and later befriended other future influential artists such as Frédéric Bazille, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. He was also involved with new artists such as Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne.

In 1874, Renoir and his friends showed their work at their own show in Paris – which was the first ever Impressionist exhibition. He contributed 6 pieces to the exhibition. While the show itself didn’t get Renoir much recognition, he soon got noticed by other patrons and his career began to take off. He received success outside of France as a result of his travels to Algeria and Italy.

Renoir was such a passionate painter that even when he was suffering from arthritis, he would continue to paint by tying paintbrushes to his wrists.

He devoted his life to art and was so devoted to it that he ensured that he paid “one last visit” to the Louvre before his death. That’s commitment right there.

Anais,

I’m getting in touch with everyone today to give them their real marks for the mid term quiz. You scored a 47/50 which translates to an A+. Super Congrats.

Jeff

Anais,
Interesting information on Renoir. Couple of typos that jump out at me, first the word Impressionism should always be capitalized, and second you set the date of his first Parisian show as 1974 instead of 1874. While your info is good I would like to see more of your personal feelings about the work and why you chose him to post on.
Jeff
