Jean Fouquet 1420-1480 (France)
Born in Tours France, Jean Fouquet was a prominent painter during the 15th century. He was the first painter to introduce Renaissance art to France.
Regardless of his notable historic art, most of Fouquet’s life/career is undocumented. Historians have attempted to piece together small parts of information; however, a lot remains uncertain.
What Type of art did he create?
Fouquet was educated in the ways of a manuscript illuminator and the painting of miniatures, he gained a lot of traction for his portrait art. The main clientele he worked for were French court Kings and nobles. Fouquet was the official painter of Charles VII and Louis XI.
What type of art style?
Spending time in Italy studying and absorbing an immense amount of knowledge, he travelled back to Tours. After his return, he ended up creating a new art style using his knowledge of both Italian painting and Flemish art. Fouquet’s work is a mix between French International Gothic and Italian Early Renaissance.

Emily,
Not bad work on Fouquet here! You have credible information on this painter where not much information on his life exists. This is certainly the same for other early Renaissance masters as well. What I would like to see more of is your reactions and feelings about the works in question. I think that is more valuable in the end than book information on a particular artist. Let me know how you feel about what you are seeing. Anyhow look forward to seeing how you fare with the next post.

Writing comments from Patrick
Hi Emily,
Judy let me know I had not made comments. Thought I had, but maybe failed the Iam and not a robot test and it didn’t post. Your post was clear and concise, if a tad brief. Suggest reading out loud so you can hear when a sentence isn’t working. For example: “Fouquet was educated in the ways of a manuscript illuminator and the painting of miniatures, he gained a lot of traction for his portrait art.” This might work better as: :Educated as a manuscript illuminator and a painter of miniatures, he gained renown for his portraiture.”
Hear the diffeence?
How would you make this sentence work better?
Spending time in Italy studying and absorbing an immense amount of knowledge, he travelled back to Tours.
