Practicum Week 6

Because of grad show, I was only at work two days this week, as it was also a long weekend for Easter. It was honestly super stressful because all I could think about while preparing for the show and also while at the show was how much work I needed to do when I got back. However, it was so nice seeing all my classmates again!

On Monday and Tuesday I worked from home for half the day, then prepared for grad show. Geraldine and I were table partners and decided to plan an elaborate theme for our booth: a picnic under the stars! The backdrop was actually nice satin fabric I had gotten from the 6th floor at Rethink, and everything else we either bought or borrowed from friends and family. I was SO proud of our table, and I think it turned out fantastic.

Surprisingly, I was more anxious about friends and family night in comparison to industry night. I think it’s because with industry, they’re there for a reason and know what to expect. With friends and family however, they’re there specifically for YOU, and not your work. They may not have even seen any of the work you’ve done before or “get” the whole design/illustration thing. I was extremely lucky though as everyone was so supportive and kind.

My favourite part was going around to everyone’s booths and collecting their little knick knacks, like stickers and business cards. I know how much work everyone put into everything and it was just so nice seeing it all come together. I’m so incredibly proud of my class and feel SO privileged to be graduating with people who I’ve come to consider my second family.

In work news, I started a new editorial project! I’m designing a couple magazine spreads. It’s a little intimidating as it’s super different from all the other work I’m doing/I’ve done at Rethink, but I have done editorial designs for a small local arts magazine so at least I have that experience.
