In the first round of sketches, I did some broad exploration, focusing mainly on my name and initials (AA) as well as various icons. This first round also served as a time to get rid of clichés. I also tried a few conceptual approaches with varying levels of success.
The second round of sketches
The second round of sketches was mostly powering through and trying to generate more ideas. Still focused on initials and icons, I tried out logos that showed my personality and most recognizable features. Even though I ended up going with concepts developed in phase 1, it was really valuable to explore different avenues.
This week, we were tasked with creating a personal self-promo ad as well as creating mood boards to our personal brand that reflected our personalities and design ideals. we were required to create a mood board for personal brands we admire, design or illustration, typography, places to work, places to play and the five senses ( one mood board for each).
For my personal ad, I wanted to showcase my conceptual side. I took inspiration from receipts and the language used by grocery stores to show viewers my strengths in a unique and playful way.
One of the many mood boards I created. A design mood board, as expected of a design class.
We also created many mood boards as an exercise to discover ourselves a bit more. While creating the mood boards, it felt weird to think about myself as if I am looking from the outside in. On the other hand, it was a good exercise to gauge what kind of things we were drawn to. Seeing everything laid out made me realise that I am drawn to many contrasting things and that I often seek to find the balance in those contrasts in my work.
a mood board describing our favourite smells. It was a bit more unexpected but fun and insightful to create!
Overall I would rate my work on this assignment as 8/10. While I did everything pretty well, perhaps I could have made a self-promo ad with a bit more consideration to its use and audience. Some mood boards would be much more effective with annotations as well.
