Blog Post #8 Braldt Bralds

Like many other iconic illustrators, Brandt Brands started off in illustration before turning to his current profession as a fine art painter and even taught as an instructor at New Yorks School of Visual arts for a couple of years. I was initially attracted to him because of unique full name as the first and last are to similar to each other to be natural and to my joy, I found that a quick google search showed his large archive of cat paintings and illustration. Besides that, however, he has other very strong and impactful paintings. From my experience, though, it is very difficult to find evidence of his illustration background as his many oil paintings and fine art prints prevail over them on the internet. His style nowadays is described as a “Dutch Master’s style” and the term conceptual realism is also used. The Greenwich workshop appropriately labels most of his art as “of this world, but not in this world” and is perhaps a couple steps away from being considered Surrealism art.

  1. Geraldine,

Fine work on C.M Shultz, Jerry Pinkney and Braldt Bralds. Bralds was a favourite of mine when a student and I met Jerry Pinkney at the Illustrator’s Workshop in 1979. A really decent and humble man (he was presenting that year there). No surprise you chose B.B as he has a thing for cats as well.
Excellent research and personal insights. Only two more to do.

    Jeff
