Blog Post # 10 James Jean

James Jean is a Taiwanese American visual artists with huge bodies of work in both commercial and fine art. He is the cover artist for a variety of major publications like DC comics and prada. His romantic, dreamy style and colour and number of collected works has also been compared to that of Maxfield Parrish. I’d describe his art much like Parrish’s as well as it really is a feat for the eyes with juicy colours and whimsical, flowy lines that almost drip off the page. His works are clearly reminiscent of East asian art (Chinese silk scroll, Japanese wood block, Shanghai ads, anatomical drawings) and are cited so by Jean himself but at the same time are very personal. He is said to reach deep into the recesses of his imagination and makes for interesting mutations of work. What gives him his current star power, I believe is that he is both highly imaginate but also high technically skilled, blending them together well, which is actually pretty rare. Ever since his commercial art, he has made the delicate transition to fine art like many other artists and has been exhibiting every year.

  1. Geraldine,

Well done with these final two postings. Chris Ware is a particularly popular choice with the class. No surprise as he’s such a great illustrator. Same goes for James Jean. What I find interesting with a fellow like Jean is that many contemporary illustrators now turn to creating graphic novels as an outlet for their creativity while he does that as well as large scale fine art works. Don’t believe that many illustrators today work in fine art in quit the same manner. Anyhow good work this term!
