Week 5 at TRIUMF has aligned with the Easter Holidays (resulting in a four day week rather than the usual five days). Since I am working remotely for my practicum and am not visiting the facilities of TRIUMF, my supervisor Diana has put together a small package for me and Cheryl (the other practicum student) as a goodie bag.

When it arrived on Thursday, I found the package contained many gifts. I received TRIUMF branded socks which will come in handy for my runs. I like to take a breather and spend some time running outside to clear up my head and get some fresh air after a long day of work at my screen.

The package also contained some stickers, a postcard, and a beautiful block print card done by a previous practicum grad student.

The message in the card and the care behind the gift has been so heartwarming to me. I will have a little something to remember TRIUMF when my stay with them is over.

It is worth mentioning that a small gift can go a long way. Sometimes it is nice to send an e-card with some beautiful artwork, especially if you can illustrate it yourself as a designer. Below is a quick sketch idea of a possible custom e-card for a holiday like Christmas (2022, year of tiger). This card is addressed to my supervisor Diana.

Something small like an e-card could remind your colleague about you, allowing you to stay in touch with them in a friendly way.

If you are curious as to what I’ve been working on this week, I would love to share that with you as well. I am deconstructing an illustrator map file to make it compatible with Elementor to turn a flat illustration into an interactive experience. Below are the two maps that I need to fuse and format properly to be used by Cheryl.

The look of a more detailed map to the left, with the simplified building shapes of the map on the right, is the aim for the end product. I am really engaged because each week I get to work on something new and exciting. The best part is when your hard work pays off and you can see it working properly live on the web.

Although my next week is the last week of my stay with TRIUMF as a practicum student, I will not be saying goodbye.

The project of “Discover our Lab” is still in progress and TRIUMF invited me to stay with them and work as an independent designer. We hope to wrap up my contract details this week for a longer stay.

Unfortunately, Cheryl would not be able to stay around until fall (due to school business). Our skills have been really complimentary as she is strong in coding and I have an eye for pleasing design. I hope to stay connected with her in the future and perhaps we could work together in the future again.
