Yearbook Spread #2

For my yearbook spread, I decided to combine the different elements of what we researched about Japonisme into one artifact. Since my groups topic was culture, I researched the culture and lifestyle that was depicted in Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Carson researched about the arrival of Matthew Perry in Japan to open up trade between the US and Japan and Rocio researched Japonisme’s effect in Europe. To combine all these aspects together, I took the style of Ukiyo-E prints, which brings along my topic and used it as the wrapping paper for lacquerware. The wrapping of lacquer was a method widely used to wrap exports between the Netherlands and Japan. Since Ukiyo prints always portray a flat image with figures and nature, I incorporated Matthew Perry’s figure, inspired by the sketches made by Japanese artists during his visit to Japan. I believe I had great creative ideas for this artifact spread and the drawing/export label are well made and clean in both writing and illustration. The only thing that could have been improved is the overall cohesiveness since without the test explaining the artifact, it is a bit confusing as to what these images convey. The lighting between the two sides also leads to some disconnects do to these factors I would give myself an 8.5/10.
