Grunge (also known as Seattle sound) is an alternative rock music genre and subculture derived from the mid-80s in Seattle, Washington. In its music root, the iconic band, Nirvana, popularized grunge music with angst-filled and introspective lyrics that explores the themes of freedom, self-doubt and rebellion.
The movement eventually broadened out to a phenomenon that exists in the scenes of fashion and design as well. In the sense of fashion, ripped jeans, thrift-store clothes are often associated with grunge aesthetics as well.
Grunge poster design comes into the picture as they accompanied the events to promote grunge rock stars and bands. Common features seen, especially in art director, David Carson’s works, are lo-fi, discoloured photography, grunge-textured background with typography bleeding off the page. The use of collage and overlaying graphic elements are also evident in grunge art. In some occasions, provocative imagery with nudity was utilized to reflect angsty and narrative tone of grunge art. Because of David Carson’s experimental and unique approach to designing, he was rewarded with the title “The Father of Grunge”.
